Svendborg Museum
Svendborg Museum is a state-recognised cultural history museum that conveys Sydfyn's local history, seafaring, welfare history and archaeology.
Svendborg Museum is the museum without walls. They convey cultural heritage in many different ways through guided tours, signs around the city, through books and exhibitions in various places in the municipality. Since 2018, the museum has also had 20 changing exhibitions in 'Den Sorte Boks', a mobile exhibition container that tells the story right where it happened.
Denmark's Welfare Museum
Svendborg Museum includes Denmark's Welfare Museum. It is the best-preserved poorhouse in the Nordics, which was in operation 1872-1974. Behind barbed wire and high walls, you can experience an important part of Denmark's welfare history and see where the inmates worked, ate, slept, were washed and punished. We open the doors to an otherwise closed world. In the authentic setting, we convey stories about and with the people who lived or live on the dark side of society: the poor, the sick, the homeless and the orphans.
The poorhouse has a useful and ornamental garden. The residents of the house looked after the garden for over 100 years. The place was self-sufficient in vegetables. Today, the garden is cultivated and cared for by the Friends of the Museumshavens, a volunteer working group. You are welcome to take a walk in the garden during your visit.
