ARoS - a world-class art museum

ARoS is one of Northern Europe's largest art museums, with 20,700 square meters spread over 10 floors. The museum dates back to 1859 and was then called Aarhus Art Museum. In 2004, the museum's fourth and current home, ARoS, opened.

With its five galleries and an entire floor dedicated to installation art, ARoS annually presents significant national and international artists as well as exhibitions of art from ARoS's own collection. In recent years, the museum has presented exhibitions by Grayson Perry, Robert Mapplethorpe, Joana Vasconcelos, Bill Viola, Olafur Eliasson, Paul McCarthy, Shirin Neshat, Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon, J.M.W. Turner, Douglas Gordon, Agnes Slott-Møller, Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann and Lu Yang.

The giant sculpture Boy and not least the rainbow on top, Your rainbow panorama, are the museum's most famous and eye-catching works, but ARoS' collection also includes works by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, Anri Sala and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, among others. The works attract visitors from all over the world to ARoS and Aarhus every year, and in 2025 ARoS will expand by 2000 km2 with the enormous art installation The Dome, A Sky space by James Turrell.

ARoS is much more than art. It is a gathering place in the heart of the city and a universe for anyone who wants to expand their horizons. The museum takes an active part in society and generates debate through its exhibitions, talks and other activities, but also by being visible in the media and participating in panel debates, conversation salons and the like.

Every year, ARoS receives around half a million visitors and opens six to eight exhibitions each year.

Area

East Jutland

East Jutland offers you a wonderful combination of fertile landscape, expansive forests, sandy shorelines and bustling big cities.

The green and hilly landscape of the region was formed by the glaciers of the last glaciation. Valleys, gorges and deep fjords were all carved by the flow of glacial melt water.

You’ll find that East Jutland is easily accessible and full of varied, outdoor experiences. It's also home to Denmark's dynamic second city, Aarhus, Mols Bjerge National Park, Samsø and Vejle.

But you also find Søhøjlandet with Silkeborg and Skanderborg's lakes and forests as well as Legoland in Billund.
